Philosophical concept of otherness and the fundamentally different. Levinas emphasized the Other's face makes ethical demands prior to ontology. The Other cannot be reduced to my categories or comprehended. Sartre analyzed how the Other's gaze objectifies me. Beauvoir applied otherness to gender—woman as Other to male subject. Said's Orientalism critiques Western construction of Eastern Other. Otherness challenges self-centered perspective. Ethics arises in encounter with irreducible Other. Tension between understanding and respecting alterity.
