Angst

Existentialist concept of anxiety arising from confronting freedom, death, and meaninglessness. Kierkegaard described angst as dizziness of freedom—vertigo facing infinite possibilities. Heidegger distinguished angst (ontological anxiety) from fear (of specific things). Angst reveals our thrown-ness and finitude. Unlike pathological anxiety, existential angst is response to the human condition. Angst can lead to authentic existence or flight into distraction. The mood discloses our being-toward-death. Accepting angst rather than fleeing enables authentic choice.
