The Golden Rule
Ethical principle appearing across cultures: treat others as you wish to be treated. Found in Christianity ("Do unto others"), Confucianism ("What you do not wish for yourself, do not impose on others"), Buddhism, Hinduism, and secular philosophy. The rule embodies reciprocity and empathy. Positive formulation emphasizes active kindness; negative formulation (Silver Rule) emphasizes avoiding harm. Kant's categorical imperative philosophically elaborates the principle. Criticisms include assuming others want what you want and difficulty with conflicting desires. Despite limitations, the Golden Rule provides accessible moral guidance.
