Yin and Yang
Chinese philosophical concept of complementary opposites in constant dynamic balance. Yin represents feminine, dark, passive, receptive, earth, moon qualities. Yang represents masculine, light, active, creative, heaven, sun qualities. Neither is superior; both are necessary. Yin and yang contain seeds of each other (depicted in the symbol's dots). They transform into each other cyclically. The concept applies to cosmology, medicine, politics, and personal development. Balance between yin and yang creates harmony; excess of either creates problems. The principle transcends simple dualism by emphasizing interdependence and transformation.
