Arthur Schopenhauer
German philosopher who developed a metaphysical system centered on the concept of Will. Schopenhauer's pessimistic philosophy, influenced by Eastern thought, proposed that suffering is inherent to existence and that aesthetic contemplation and asceticism offer temporary relief. His work on compassion, art, and the denial of the will to life influenced later existentialists and psychologists. Schopenhauer's elegant prose and psychological insights gained recognition only late in his life.
